Taylor's paradox and Lévi-Strauss's “drama”
about historical construction in archeology

Two works from the mid-20th century are visited that address the issue of historical construction by three branches of anthropology: ethnology, ethnography and archaeology. In them, attention is paid to the difficulties involved in the production of history in relation to societies that lack written documents. The points made by Taylor and Lévi-Strauss are further examined in the light of recent developments in the philosophy of history in relation to the concept of narration. The confrontation allows us to understand challenges posed by the construction of history from material sources.
